Integrated Six-Year Cardiothoracic Surgery Residency Program

UPMC's Integrated Six-Year Cardiothoracic Surgery Residency Program is for those just out of medical school interested in training with one of the nation’s premier cardiothoracic surgery residency programs.

The six-year program includes:

  • Three years of requisite general surgery and cardiothoracic surgery training (PGY 1-3)
  • Three years of requisite cardiothoracic surgery training (PGY 4-6)
  • Two years academic enrichment through laboratory or clinical research opportunities (great for those wishing to pursue a graduate degree in a related or ancillary field). These years are fully funded via the Department's NIH T32 NHLBI training grant

This curriculum provides residents with a focused background and hands-on experience in cardiothoracic surgery, including:

  • 26 months core surgical education for cardiac track
  • 25 months core surgical education in thoracic track
  • It allows for one resident per post-graduate year in each of the cardiac and thoracic tracks for a total complement of 12 residents.
