Two-Year Cardiothoracic Surgery Fellowship Program
The UPMC two-year cardiothoracic surgery fellowship program is for those who have successfully completed an accredited general surgery residency. The program includes one fellow per year in the cardiac track and one per year in the thoracic track, for a total of four residents.
Cardiac Track
Cardiac track residents complete the following during their two-year training stream:
- 16 adult cardiac rotations
- 2 pediatric cardiac rotations
- 8 general thoracic rotations
Thoracic Track
Thoracic track residents complete the following during their two-year training stream:
- 18 general thoracic rotations
- 7 adult cardiac rotations
- 1 pediatric cardiac rotation
Cardiothoracic Surgery Training
During training, fellows receive exposure to:
- Index operations
- Aortic surgery
- Aortic valve surgery
- Congenital heart disease procedures
- Acquired pediatric heart disease procedure
- Mitral valve surgery
- Coronary artery bypass graft surgery
- Ventricular assist device implantation
- Heart and lung transplant
- Extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation and cardiopulmonary bypass
- Nissen fundoplication
- Esophagectomy
- Lobectomy
- Endoscopic interventions
- Robotic-assisted thoracic surgery
- Complex re-do surgery
How to Apply to the Two-Year Cardiothoracic Surgery Fellowship Program
Applications are accepted through the ERAS® (Electronic Residency Application Service) website.
Applicants must apply by January 31 for consideration.
