Dr. Pyongsoo D. Yoon is a busy clinical surgeon with expertise in complex coronary surgery. Under his leadership, both UPMC Presbyterian and UPMC Passavant have achieved a three-star rating for coronary arterty bypass surgery by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons. Importantly, he is a nationally sought after teacher and is widely recognized for his impact on the next generation of cardiothoracic surgeons. He has been awarded the Faculty of the Year Award recognizing his impact as an educator and mentor as voted on by Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery residents and fellows for the past 5 consecutive years. Given his success, he was appointed Executive Vice Chair of Education in the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery in 2023. In this role, he oversees all medical education and training in the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, from students to trainees to early-career surgeon mentorship.

Dr. Yoon's research interests explore the relationship between clinical outcome and early ambulation and early-recovery after surgery initiatives and cardiothoracic surgical education, including optimizing operative autonomy for trainees.
