Education & Training

The Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery is dedicated to training to next generation of cardiothoracic surgeons and lifelong pursuit of education and scholarship.  The Department carries out this mission through a robust variety of educational opportunities and training programs for all levels of learners.

Medical Student Programs

The Department hosts a full curriculum of educational experiences designed for MS1 to MS4 for both internal University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and external medical students.

ACGME Residencies and Fellowships

The Department is home to 3 ACGME accredited programs: a Thoracic Surgery Independent Fellowship (total complement of 8 trainees), a Thoracic Surgery Integrated Residency (total complement of 12 trainees), and a Congenital Cardiac Surgery Fellowship (total complement of 1 trainee).

Non-ACGME Advanced Fellowships

The Department offers non-ACGME sub-specialized, advanced training in minimally invasive thoracic surgery, lung transplantation, aortic surgery and structural heart interventions, and heart transplantation and ventricular assist devices.

Continuing Medical Education Symposia

The Department hosts several virtual, hybrid, and continuing medical education symposia each academic year in each of our sub-specialty areas, welcoming learners from around the world.

NHLBI T32 Training Grant

The University of Pittsburgh's Cardiothoracic Surgery T32 Training Program was established to provide trainees with a strong foundation in research and an invaluable mentorship experience, with the ultimate goal of equipping appointees as competitive surgery faculty in an academic setting.

Visiting Professorships

The Department annually hosts world-renowned cardiothoracic surgeons and scientists for Visiting Professorship visits to our program in Pittsburgh.  Our most prestigious annual Visiting Professorship is the Henry. T. "Hank" Bahnson Lectureship, hosted in partnership with the Department of Surgery.
