Kentaro Noda, PhD

Dr. Noda completed his PhD in Medical Sciences in 2015 at Kitasato University in Japan with a focus on organ transplantation. He joined the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery as an Academic Health Sciences Research Fellow in 2011 and Visiting Scholar in 2014. He became a Research Assistant Professor in 2017, and was subsequently promoted to Research Associate Professor in 2024. Dr. Noda previously served as the Research Program Manager of Ex Vivo Lung Perfusion between 2015-2021 and currently serves as the Director of Ex Vivo Lung Perfusion at the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery since 2021. He is also the co-director of both the Lung Transplant Research Laboratory and the Pitt Ex Vivo Research Center.

Dr. Noda’s research efforts have culminated in the publication of 10 original articles as first author or correspondent author and 17 publications as a co-author in high-impact, peer-reviewed scientific journals, as well as an invited commentary and book chapter. He has contributed numerous abstracts to the field, over 40 of which are published in journals, and has presented his findings both domestically and internationally. He currently has 4 active external grants from the NIH, NSF, and Pennsylvania State Commonwealth to support his ongoing projects.

Dr. Noda also plays a key role in both teaching and mentorship for the Department, having served as co-principal investigator to three postdoctoral research fellows thus far. He has mentored several medical and undergraduate students, providing them with basic and clinical research experience opportunities. Moreover, Dr. Noda is dedicated to his editorial responsibilities, serving as a review editor and reviewer for multiple reputable scientific journals. He is an integral member of the Department whose accomplishments have contributed to UPMC’s recognition as one of the biggest EVLP lung transplant clinical/research centers nationwide.

Research Interests

Dr. Noda’s research focuses on isolated organ perfusion, preservation, and transplantation, with an emphasis on ex vivo lung perfusion (EVLP) in lung transplantation. His work seeks to optimize EVLP techniques for better organ preservation, utilize EVLP pretreatment of lung grafts to improve organ quality and enhance lung repair, and develop novel approaches to improve posttransplant outcomes.
